Minimalist Challenge Day 2: Los Cabos Doll Souvenir and Accompanying Mini Sombrero

I’m not sure why my friend gave me this doll since I have a doll phobia and am deathly afraid of inanimate objects that look like humans. Still grateful for the souvenir from Los Cabos! But it’s not bringing me any joy, and actually terrifies me a bit.

Terrifying Doll

The accompanying mini sombrero did not originally accompany the doll. It was on a random tequila bottle at a grocery store, and I loved it so much that the manager there gave it to me without making me buy the tequila. I’ve had it for almost two years, lugged it around, wore it to my first silly hat, tea party book club shindig.

Mini Sombrero

But it’s not bringing me any joy and doesn’t really match the rest of the paraphernalia I have decorating my counters. So off it and the creepy doll goes.

The Minimalist Challenge: Day 1

In November, I’m going to be participating in the Minimalism Challenge. On the first day, I’ll give up one thing, on the second day, I’ll give up 2 things, and so on until on the 31st day, I’ll give up 31 things. I’ll document my progress here so that I’m held accountable for the things I give up–and also so I’ll have a memory of these items.

Letting go can be liberating, but it can also be tough, especially when they’re sentimental objects. But I’m tired of having so much clutter, keeping things in storage that don’t bring me joy and that I wouldn’t even remember about except that they’re taking up space in my room. So here’s to getting rid of things and freeing myself from material bondage.

Baby Cactus

The first thing I’m giving up is my baby cactus. We bought this baby on our writing retreat back in September randomly when we took a break to buy groceries. I loved this thing so much, I couldn’t stop snapping it. But since then, it has been sitting on my counter, unloved and, let’s be honest, dying. Because I can’t take care of plants. I’M LESS NURTURING THAN THE DESERT.

So goodbye baby cactus. You were loved.

Summer Sewing Series: 10 Dresses in 10 Weeks Challenge

I’m so excited to finally reveal the project I keep hinting at. It’s…duh dun duh DUN!

10 Dresses Collage

That’s right guys. I challenge you to make 10 dresses in the next 10 weeks with me. I’ve been dying to make cute floral, summery dresses, and I can’t wait to share with you what I’ve been up to. And invite you to sew with me! The best part is I’ll be posting tutorials for each dress I make, so you can sew along! Yipee!

This summer series will officially launch next Tuesday with the first video tutorial, so stay tuned and check back often both here on my blog and on my channel. Here’s the intro video for a sneak peak of all the dresses:

This is the schedule for the dresses in the video. Subject to changes. Because of life.

You know what’s crazy? The original idea was that I’d make one dress a week for the next whole year. Yeah! When I told my friend that I might be taking on a challenge to make 52 dresses in 52 weeks, she stared at me as if I was crazy. Then I realized that she was right.

Anyone who’s met me knows how much I adoooore dresses. That’s all I ever wear anymore. Even for work, I’m in a dress 4 days out of 5 (and the one day is a Friday which happens to be casual Friday. Even though I always regret it, I can’t miss my chance to wear jeans to the office).

Plus right now I’m obsessing with florals and bright prints. I’m dying to make about a million fit-and-flare, swing, and tank dresses. Definitely going to throw in some beach-y numbers, and maybe finally get around to sewing a tailored, zippered one. I’m a little nervous and excited. I know life might get in the way some weeks, but what can it hurt to try? And in the end, I’ll have a million dresses–which is sort of a big fantasy for me. Because I’m weird.

For a while now, I’ve been neglecting my sewing and arts/crafts hobby, but I’m going to come back in full force, and taking on this huge project.

This is it guys. I’m so excited! Tutorials will be posted every Tuesday. Why Tuesday? (you ask but silently and only in my head). Because Tutorial Tuesday has a nice ring to it. And because I’ll need at least the weekend to work on the dress, and because Monday sucks. So Tuesday it is.

I’m inviting–no, I’m challenging!–you guys to be a part of this. Hey, in the end, you’ll at least have ten dresses for the summer. And now you have a good reason to go fabric shopping–not that you need one. 🙂

Who’s with me?
